What does Motion do?

Motion uses AI to plan your workday automatically: it places tasks around your meetings, re-plans when things shift, schedules meetings, and manages projects and docs for teams. Its App Store listing says the mobile app is a companion to the web/desktop app and not a standalone app, and some settings can only be changed on a computer.

From Motion's App Store listing and pricing page:

  • Automatic day planning and smart notifications
  • One-click meeting scheduling and team collaboration
  • AI chat, AI projects and tasks, AI calendar and meetings, AI docs and notes
  • Business AI adds team capacity planning, dashboards, Gantt charts, time tracking and permissions
  • AI credits per seat each month (7,500 on Pro AI, 15,000 on Business AI)

Motion's listing says it does "not encourage users without a computer to download this mobile app." If you live on your phone, that matters.

What does The Operator Standard do differently?

The Operator Standard is built around goals and behaviour, not calendars and projects. You set goals, ARCANE breaks them into daily critical tasks, and a morning briefing syncs your calendar. Finish all five tasks to win the day; miss one and you earn a strike your crew can see. It also includes podcast episodes and livestreams.

Key differences:

  • Goals, not workload. Motion is good at fitting many work tasks into a day. The Operator Standard deliberately limits you to five critical tasks. See the Power List explained.
  • Social pressure. Motion has no streak-and-strike scoreboard shared with a peer group. The Operator Standard is built around one.
  • Phone first. The Operator Standard runs on iPhone and Android, and on Apple-silicon Macs as an iPhone app; we found no browser version.
  • Personal plus business. Health, family and business goals sit on the same list.

Which is cheaper, Motion or The Operator Standard?

On a yearly in-app plan, Motion is cheaper: $294.99 a year versus $549.99 for The Operator Standard in the US App Store. Monthly in-app prices are close, $44.99 versus $49.99. Motion's web pricing page lists Pro AI at 19 and Business AI at 29, so buying Motion on the web may cost less again.

Who should choose Motion, and who should choose The Operator Standard?

Choose Motion if your calendar is packed, you work at a computer, and you need tasks and meetings scheduled automatically, especially across a team. Choose The Operator Standard if your problem is consistency on a handful of important goals and you respond to accountability from other people.

  1. Managers and teams juggling projects: Motion. Capacity planning and Gantt charts are outside The Operator Standard's scope.
  2. Solo founders who know what to do but do not do it: The Operator Standard's streaks, strikes and crews target that.
  3. Phone-only users: The Operator Standard, since Motion says its mobile app is not standalone.
  4. Some people use both: Motion for the workday calendar, The Operator Standard for the five things that must happen.

Frequently asked questions

Is Motion better than The Operator Standard?

For scheduling work around meetings and running team projects, Motion is the stronger tool. For daily follow-through on a few personal and business goals with peer accountability, The Operator Standard is built for that job. They overlap less than their "AI planner" labels suggest.

Does Motion have a free trial?

Yes. Motion's App Store listing offers a 7-day free trial, and its pricing page says "Start your free trial" as of October 30, 2026. A Motion subscription is required to use the app after the trial. The Operator Standard's only trial we found is for 75 HARD finishers.

Can I use Motion on my phone only?

Motion advises against it. Its App Store listing says the mobile app is a companion to the web/desktop app, not a standalone app, and that it does not encourage users without a computer to download it. The Operator Standard is designed for phones.

Do both apps use AI?

Yes, differently. Motion's AI schedules tasks and meetings, writes, and manages projects using monthly AI credits. The Operator Standard's ARCANE AI turns your goals into daily tasks and a morning briefing. See our ARCANE AI guide for how it works.
